Strawberry Apple Crisp

This may seem like your everyday apple crisp recipe, but wow does it ever taste extraordinary! It is probably one of the best variations of apple crisp that I have had! The strawberries, nutmeg, and chopped pecans definitely give it that extra something special. It's simple comfort food at it's best.

Ingredients:

Filling:
3 large granny smith apples, peeled and cubed
1 heaping cup fresh or frozen strawberries (thawed), cut into chunks
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp all-purpose flour

Topping:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup quick oats
1/4 cup pecans, finely chopped
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cut into cubes

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease an 8x8" or 9x9" baking pan with butter.

Toss the berries, apple, brown sugar and flour in a medium bowl. Set aside.

In a separate medium bowl, mix together the topping ingredients using two butter knives or  a pastry blender until it is crumbly and no large chunks of butter remain.

Pour the filling mixture into the prepared pan. Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the fruit.

Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until browned and bubbly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
